Department of Science and Technology (DST)

The Hi-Hanyile Project, located 5km from the Giyani town under the Mabunda Tribal Authority, was initiated in 2002 by the DST. This was on the foundation of an earlier ‘experimental project’ established in 996 in Xikukwani Village situation 5km from Giyani. The project formed part of the Poverty Alleviation Programme under the DST. Herbal extracts such as lemon grass and Lippia javinica were cultivated and a distillation unit and candle factory were built to produce mosquito repellent candles. The overall objective of the project was to ensure that DST (who was in the process on phasing out their participation in the project), successfully pulled out while ensuring the successes of the project were further strengthened and consolidated, and challenges faced were addressed appropriately.


The overall objective of the programme is to

DST required the following:
  • The development of a comprehensive business plan aimed at facilitating an orderly and strategic exit from the project
  • The development of key milestones that outline the different project phases and goals to be achieved
  • The development of an investor memorandum/prospectus
